Club News - Roding Rotary Club

On Sunday 16 August a group of us visited Copped Hall. We were given a pre-arranged guided tour of the house and grounds lasting three hours. The visit also included a break at the Racquets Court where volunteers provided very welcome refreshments. Our guide, Linda, was impressively knowledgeable. The visit had many highlights. The walled garden could not but be affected by the drought but there was still much to admire including newly planted peach and nectarine trees, complete with their own individual umbrellas! We also saw evidence of on-going excavation of the foundations of the original Elizabethan house including a recently uncovered set of steps. Inside the house we were also impressed by the newly installed cantilevered main staircase, now extending right up to the second floor. Apparently each step has cost two thousand pounds. However, there is as yet no balustrade or carpet so visitors will not be using the staircase for some time to come.
